Basketball stadium call for funds

GRASSROOTS basketball backers have urged the State Government to help the sport bounce back on the Gold Coast by putting a $5 million 'party fund' into an upgrade of the Carrara Indoor Stadium.

An overwhelming number of Bulletin readers say basketball should be given its own stadium on the Coast, to be used by both junior players and the Gold Coast Blaze.

Meanwhile, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary CEO Jonathan Fisher has entered the discussion of what to do with the funds left over from the government's new SuperCarnivale motorsport festival by proposing an environment-themed major concert at Skilled Park.

The comments were a response to Premier Anna Bligh's question to Bulletin readers on events or attractions the funds should go to.

The flood of support followed the biggest crowd in Gold Coast basketball history packing into the Gold Coast convention centre to see the Blaze win on Friday night.

More than half of the comments posted on gold coast.com.au and sent via SMS were pleading for a basketball stadium.

The fans believe all basketball players would benefit from having a 'home base' for club fixtures, to host finals and carnivals and play state and national season fixtures.

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke initially suggested hosting the Red Bull Air Race series, but yesterday said he would endorse the upgrade of the Carrara facility.

Cr Clarke said he had attended the Blaze game on Friday night with Ms Bligh, where they had discussed the upgrade.

Some readers wanted the money directed at 'buying back' the closed Tipplers Resort on South Stradbroke Island, saying it would be a much better option than 'wasting' money on another party event.

Others said putting the money into low-cost housing and education were more important than another event for the Gold Coast.
